As a general rule, I love Ferraris. They’re one of my top favorite car makers in the world, and they would have to put out something truly hideous for me not to like one of their cars. With that being said, since I love almost every Ferrari I see, very few of them make me go “WOW.” The limited edition J50 is one such car that does elicit that response from me.
The J50 is a limited edition 488 with a new body and an extra 20 hp. The name is derived from Ferrari’s celebration of 50 years in Japan…so J50. The most striking aspect of the car, however, is its looks. On the new body styling, Ferrari says:
The Ferrari J50 is a two-seater, mid-rear-engined roadster that marks a return to the targa body style evocative of several well-loved Ferrari road cars of the 1970s and 1980s.
Created by Ferrari’s Special Projects department and designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre team in Maranello, just 10 examples of the J50 will be built and, in the spirit of Ferrari’s fuori serie tradition, each one will be tailored specifically to the customer’s requirements.
The bodywork is all new and heralds a radically futuristic design language…The design approach was led by the desire to create a very low-slung roadster, encapsulating intrinsic Ferrari values of nimbleness and agility. To achieve this, a strong dynamic was imprinted on the flank of the car by the converging interplay between two main guiding lines: the slanted top edge of the side window, continuous with the windscreen, and the raked black swage line which dramatically rises from the low-set nose until it vanishes in the air intake aft of the doors.
In layman’s terms, it’s sleek, it’s beautiful, it’s striking, and it’s one of the most gorgeous Ferraris I have seen in a very long time. What’s interesting about the J50 is the front end, which is very low slung and features headlights that are far more narrow and “squinty” than I have seen in most Ferraris. In fact, it almost gives it a Sesto Elemento look when viewing the J50 from the side.
Only 10 of these magnificent cars will be made, so it’s kind of up in the air whether or not we’ll hear more about the J50.
