Well, I never thought I would see the day where I can walk down to the local Dodge dealership and buy a red blooded American muscle car that WON’T kill me on ice! Dodge just announced the Challenger GT, the first AWD muscle car ever! Can you tell I’m excited?
Unfortunately, there are a few deviations from the AWD Challenger concept we saw a while back. For starters, the GT will not be V8 powered (probably for the best). The GT will be powered by a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6, which will produce 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque.
Not too shabby if I’m honest. Maybe I’m a bit too cowardly, but if I’m going to be taking my Challenger GT up to Tahoe for some snowy fun, I’d like for it to be manageable, and I get the feeling that the HEMI 392 might have just been a bit too much to handle in slippery conditions.
The GT will function as a RWD vehicle for the majority of your time tottering about, but when it senses loss of traction, the three mode adjustable stability control will kick in and convert to AWD (with you determining just how much “interference” from the nannies you want).
The Challenger GT starts at $34,490, with a $995 upgrade to leather/suede seats, a performance steering wheel, and an Alpine stereo system. Production is scheduled for January, with arrival at dealers in the first quarter of 2017.
